I just bought a 72 van and the reverse lights were not working.i bought all new tail light assemblys and when I went to install they I got a big surprise.The wires have been hacked to hell.There is wires soldered here and there and different colors.Just wondering if anybody could tell me where I could get a diagram of all the wires,colore and what they are for?Is there a web site I could go to? there is the type 2 .com and the ratwell site also there is the samba site for help besides this one.

Here is a good link to LOTS of VW wiring diagrams: http://http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/ This one is specific to your 1972 and is color, but the descriptions are in German! http://http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/Type_2_-1700_from_August_1971-2.jpg Another good place to look would be in your Bentley manual, assuming you have one!
