From NASA:
Baby, it's cold outside -- but you can still enjoy the best meteor shower of the year. The 2010 Geminid meteor shower promises to be lively, with realistic viewing rates of 50-80 meteors per hour and potential peaks reaching 120 meteors per hour. Anytime between Dec. 12-16 is a valid window for Geminid-watching, but the night of Dec. 13-14 is the anticipated peak.

From KingBee:
The later you stay up, or the earlier you get up, the better.  I heard the best time is arounf 3a.m..
So if you are a brave, hearty, imsomniac camper with a good coat, this is the night for you!

As of now the Western and Southern sections of New England will be socked in with passing rain and passing clouds.  some are expected to move though some will stick around.

I don't have the opportunity to travel father than the storm front, so I'll put up my chair in the diverway, put a couple in the small cooler, kick back in the lounge chair and hope for a break in the clouds so I can say "oh did you see that one!".

If anything changes in the next 24 hours I'll post something for you free and crazy folks who can jump in their bus, grab a sub sandwich and GO!!!

You always knew that bus would make you rich and famous.  Or at least famous ... or at least the bus would be famous ....
What year is your bus?

You CAN access the beach at night if you stop by the camp office and get a "fishing pass" (it's free).  Basically it's a registration so they know who has gone near the water at night (in case of the worst case scenario of night swimming happens).
Hmmm ... sitting on the beach looking up at the most prolific meteor shower of the year sounds great!
I hope the weather is clear!!!!

VW stuff Wanted / Bus needed for a movie shoot 8-10 thru 8-12
« on: August 04, 2010, 09:56:45 AM »
I have a buddy who is looking for a bus to use in a movie shoot.  I would let him use mine but I''ve got a shifting issue w/ 1st gear and I'd hate for them to get set up ... lights camera action ...  and the actor can't get her into first.
The bus would be needed for Tuesday (8/10) through Thursday (8/12) finished shooting around Noon.
The bus does not need to be in great shape, 'charater' of the bus is ok (beat up is ok, but not nessasary!).
Please feel free to contact the set coordinator directly at marc.damato@gmail.com or feel free to ask me via limbo email or this posting.

Hmmm ... the beach may be a good viewing area too.  Hammomassette St Park in CT may provide a good spot as well.  I beluieve you can access the beach at night from the campground (I will confirm).  Depending on the weather, that may dictate where to go.  I will post again the closer to the date.

HOLY COW there are a ton of pics from this year!!!
How many bus's were there?  How many bus drivers and passengers do you think attended this year?  Baron do you have the tally in from the signin book?
My guess:

bus's: 53 (all years)
dogs: 7 (all sizes)
bus affiliated riders/attendees: .... hmmm .... let's see ...
2 riders per bus average is 106 .... then there's 30% with kids at an average of 2 kids per is 31.8 ... round up .... for a grand total of
138 furry freaky happy campers** (all years and sizes)

**Disclaimer: not all campers are furry, not all results typical, your actual mileage may vary, no VW's were harmed in the making of this event.

The Perseidies Meteor Shower Peaks the night of August 12 (a Thursday) to the 13th (as in Friday the 13th), usually a very lucky day for me!  Named after the Greek Hero Perseus, where the meteors seem to eminate from his constellation.

I'm looking for a campground in the middle of a rural area.  I thought the Bald Mtn CG where West River Westies takes place might be a good candidate.

A clear night and dark skies is needed to really appreciate this cosmic event.
The moon will be waxing and be at about 1/4 (like the cheshire cat's smile!) and should be a relativlel dark night.

Any suggestions on another CG?  Anyone want to join us?

I think either Sat morning or Sunday after checkout would be the best time to go.
If on Sat, go for the short drive/hike and let the air heat up a bit before going tubing.
If on Sunday it would be a cherry on the sunday (I made a pun!!!!).

When you get in, stop by for a Flying Dog and we'll make plans.

We (yes there are 5 of us in 1 bus!) will be arriving Friday later in the afternoon, 4ish and will be in "Honey" (name and color) 86 Vanagon.  I will put up our 'Earth' flag on top of the bus so you know who we are.

Gonna go home a pack the hard topper and rafts now!!!!
