I have used dryer sheets with success and also, unfortunately without any sucess last year.    

My mouse plan (for Vanagon) is as follows,  Wire mesh across battery vent holes - done.  Block off around inner upper grill that feeds the heater box - it is open along the sides and in the middle around the grill screws mounting tab.
I'm putting aluminum screen window netting inside the tubes to the heater box so to keep mice out of the box if they get into the van.

Finally blocking "knee bar" channel that feed the front doors on the way to feed rear upper vents (do those things really throw any meaningful air?

And I will continue to use dryer sheets. I've trapped at least a dozen mice in my shed this spring!

Let me clarify - it's not the engine having heating problems, it just dealing with all the coolant and heater hoses, etc.  

What is the next $6K for?  You could go Suby for close to that.
Your engine might just have a dropped valve seat, in which case a new head might be all you need.  When I got my air-cooled Westy, 1st thing I did was rebuild the entire engine, pistons, etc.  Knowing what I know now, the bottom end was probably fine and new (rebult) heads was probably all it needed and I would have been on the raod for far less money - even though I really enjoyed re-building the engine.

See if someone can evaluate the bottom end for you before you throw a new motor in it.   If even one head will get you home, perhaps that is the way to go.

I feel your pain.  I take it that you are heading to Rockport MA and stuck in Fayetteville?  So close, but yet so far away.

I had an AC vanagon Westy, and despite rebuilding the engine, brake, new pop-top, etc, I finally gave up on it when a water cooled pop-top Weekender came along.  

I just could not take the slow on hills.  flat ground was fine, but an up-hill on ramp seem to be taking my life in my hands, along with everyone else's.  Now having said that, almost all my problems with the new van have been cooling or heating system related.

I'll go Suby or Z-Tec at some point.  

Stan (Stan;s classic car in MA) had an 81 Westy (P-27), no propane, stove or fridge with head work and a 914 cam I believe and took major trips with it.   You should call him for advice.

Hit the A.I.R.S. list to find local help.  A used head might be all you need to get home and then you can take your time to make a better decision.  

Don;t worry about about the roof - been there, Boat paint works well.  
Also a Suby into an AC cooled van can, and has, been done.

John Reynolds here - yeah, I'd pick any engine except a 2.1 (or a 1.9). My beef with the engine is the huge amount of small pain in the butt hoses and then aging plastic components in the cooling systems.  

Several people have put water cooled in Bay window busses.  The slickest radiator set-up I ever saw was mounted in a fake spare wheel on the front.  It looked like a tire with a cover on it, only the front was a chrome or stainless mesh, outer band was chrome or shiny metal.  Looked like a spare tire with a hard cover on it.

Hope to see you!  You can always campout at my place in SoEast Mass - 5 miles from the Atlantic Ocean - but we have already exchanged e-mails about that.

Some places may be closed in October, but a lot of places, and I would think perhaps all state parks, will be open.  Some places close their bathrooms when there is a chance of freezing weather, but generally, Oct should be OK for most of New England.   After Columbus day weekend (Oct 11th 2010), less pickings for sure.

September into October is a great travel time in New England with fall foilage.  Having said that, in October, depending how far North you are, the weather can range from t-shirt weather to freezing - sometimes in the same day!

Yes the US rigs will use a lot of gas.  I don't know the mileage, but I checked some forums and I'd expect less than 10 miles per US gallons (23.5 L/100KM).  7-8 mpg (33.6 - 29.4 L/100KM) seem to be popular - MrLimbo has a van-fornt motor home rig, maybe he can pipe in.   Gas right now is about $2.90/gallon

I guess what I was thinking is that some O2 sensors have a heated circuit.  So sure unplugged van runs poorly.  But if the heating circuit is off, then the van may not run great until the exhaust heats up the O2 sensor.    I did not check to see if your van has a heated 02 sensor though.

If you have a known good ECU, then I do a pulg- & play with that - but I'd guess most problems with the ECU would be constant.
