Technical Concerns / trickle Charger
« on: August 19, 2008, 06:11:58 PM »
I agree with Beebrew, you need to hook up a outlet which connects to the AUX battery.

We use a trickle solar panel for the Aux battery too. Works ok but I find you have to be careful not to overcharge. We had to do something so as to stop the charging when it toped 12.5 or so volts. And we put an extra 12volt outlet in the cabinet just under the sink of the Westy (in the brown panel with the stove control knobs) right next to the Westfalia label. Looks pretty good. and we wired it to the Aux battery. We connect up the solar charger to it and run the cord through the slider and put the panel up on the luggage rack. Lots of sun up there. Seems to work fine and the extra 12 volt outlet is helpful there too for the 12 volt coffee maker of course :)

Hi there,

Sounds like you may need a brake job. Drums could be warped or break shoes could be  completely gone. Its possible that the cylinders could be bad. Sounds like its a candidate for a full brake job.
We are in Pelham NH I private messaged you yesterday and we could work out the details.   NO problem if you want to bring the van by. Seems like we are always around here working on one of the vans.

Where do you like to go Camping? / Hermit Island
« on: August 17, 2008, 12:30:03 PM »
I love it there.Sites are secluded..mostly and the beach sites would be great for kids. Has been very busy there lately. Also the views from some of the water sites are fantastic.

Has trails and beaches some are secluded . Great trails for biking.

Been going there for 10 years or so and love it.

Hi there...

Can try to help here. Is the Van a Syncro? Sounds like it could be a CV joint. They seem to be plaguing us lately. Do you hear a ticking or thumping sound when you drive. The brakes are a good possiblity. We had to replace the front spindle, and full brake job on one of ours already so we have been there.

Welcome to Vanagon ownership :)

Technical Concerns / Poptop canvas replacement
« on: August 15, 2008, 11:50:32 AM »
Hi there, Just thought I would through my 2 cents in. We just replaced a canvas on one of our vans( the 86 westy). The orginal canvas was in good shape but very dirty. We put in in the washing machine after removing it. Cold water, gentle cycle in a front loader and it came out pretty good. (see pics in profile). Line drying and need to reapply canvas waterproofing. Still some marks from where the PO had left the canvas hanging out of the poptop after closing it but outside of that and a hole in the screen which was there before it came out fine.
Taking off the poptop proved to be a difficult task. tAkes 2 or 3 people. And reinstalling it and lining it up so it closes freely took some time. I agree replacing the canvas with the poptop on is much easier. Even with the original.  But with some precise measure ments as stated before in this thread and tools it was not a bad project once the poptop was back on. We had to take the poptop off due to huge amount of mold inside and on top. Just proved to be easier to clean it when it was off with some bleach solution and a good pressure washer.
But thanks for the info regarding replacement canvases...Go westy seems to be the way to go with that..we will probably need a new one.
Anyone try the Bus Depots canvases? I heard they were good also.

Yes, Freeport is an excellent idea after labor day. Always hit there before going to Hermit Island (on coast near Bath) so will probably go there on the way to BBB also. Would be nice to do a nite or 2 at Hermit also but dont know. Always like Hermit Island!

You are so right the Maine coast is beautiful...

Thanks,
It will be our 1st time here. Cant wait...Hoping to see some famliar faces as well as some Volks we met last at WWW V

Probably a good idea not to go into labor at a campout..your right about that...

And I did not know it was one of the oldest event...the campground sure looks nice on line :)

Where do you like to go Camping? / Hermit Island
« on: July 06, 2008, 11:24:12 AM »
I find the natural beauty of Hermit Island near Bath is excellent. Been there numerous times and many sites are private and well suited to the van. We try to get the sites along the water which are beautiful. Can see a great sunset from there. But they are hard to get in Summer. Going off season in Sept is excellent. Not that hot and can pick and choose your sites. No reservations.

Also hot(well warm ) showers and flush toilets available and a store. And 4 beaches, hiking trails ect. Its great! Anyone been there..I heard that BbB was held there...? Just throwing this out there...
