Vanagon concerns / 84 Westy - soft clutch
« on: August 24, 2011, 02:00:57 PM »
When I slowly depress the clutch pedal it seems soft (less resistance) .  When I quickly depress the pedal it seems alright.  Anybody heard of this? What does it mean?
I'd like to know because I want to take off this weekend to Westcott Beach.

I am posting this for a local friend who needs assistance with his campmobile -- Phil

Basically my left brake light doesn't work and also the right signal light has a fast flash in both
the front and the rear.  I've check and changed the bulbs along with the grounds.  I've lightly sanded the ground clips to ensure a good connection.  Also, when I have my right signal light on and I step on the brakes the signal bulbs in the dash go out.  When my left signal is on, the lights in the dash still flash and everything is fine.
When I step on the brakes, the right red brake light goes on, but the left one does not.  Also when I have the headlights turned on, the right tail light goes on, but the left does not.

BTW, everything was working last year up until about the end of summer.  I didn't do any type of repairs or mods.  It just seemed to happen by itself.  Its very strange.
Thats a quick run down on what works and what doesn't and any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Bus Blog / Trenton Falls, New York (just outside of Utica, NY)
« on: October 06, 2008, 12:01:05 AM »
I just visited Trenton Falls, NY. It is open to the public only 2 weekends in the fall and two weekends in the spring.  I am once again amazed at the history and very unique geology of this area. This place is not well known although it should be. These falls and the whole gorge are on private property. In fact, during most of it history, the land has been held privately. Most of my life, and I been here for a while, it has been owned by power companies since there is a dam and generating plant there. Hence, its relatively unknown and unappreciated.   Had it had been on public land like Niagara Falls, it might have received better notice.  You may think my comparision to Niagara Falls a stretch? Well, it isn't.  This area is quite spectacular in many ways. First, there is a series of 3 falls. If you can imagine in this photo I took below water flowing and cascading down from shoreline to shoreline you can see how impressive this upper falls area is/was, and there are more drops above and below this falls. Seldom these days does the public ever see water flowing over these majestic falls and down through the gorge. There is a dam on top and the flow is quite regulated. But, in my minds eye and from old photographs, you can see why this was quite striking to see in its natural state with waters flowing, mist rising, and the constant sound of water crashing down.  Still, without the free flowing waters, it is quite extraordinary. This gorge and these falls are on par with the top New york attractions, Niagara Falls and the Letchworth Gorge come to mind.

Beyond its natural beauty, it is of great interest geologically. The gorge and its falls were probably created by receding glaciers which created many oddities here in  New York State.  The rocks exposed in the gorge dates back 440 to 460 MILLION years ago. Yes, the fossils I held in my hand that were sitting on a picnic table during my visit this week, date back to the Ordovician Period, when this area was a sea bed.  I was holding fossils from early life on this planet.

Below is a link to a web site devoted to the history, both socially and Geologically to the Trenton Falls area.
The site was created by Harvard University, a well known college located in Massachusetts. Read over the site and take time to look at the various links. There are all kinds of interesting stuff.

In conclusion, if I were King of the World, and energy wasn't an issue, I would have the dam and the power station demolished and return this area to the public and restore its natural beauty. In fact, maybe someday, it will be possible to return this land to it's original state, at least I hope so. It just seems wrong to me for a power company to own a natural wonder.

Here is the deal. This has happened to me twice. I was driving my 84 Westy I get a couple of miles from my house and it starts to lose power. I step on the gas and it rev’s but when I put it in gear to go it just has no strength. This has happened twice now. The first time it was raining and the second time it had just finished raining and was very damp outside. This condition last for a while maybe ten to 15 minutes and then gets better and after a while it drives normal again. A friend who was with me the second time said it smelled like it was overheating but the gauge showed normal temperature and I have plenty of fluid in the reservoir.
Facts to know. I recently had to refill my coolant because I had to repair a leak I had on my way to West River Westies, yes, we purged the lines of air. Also, my oxygen sensor light has been on for a while.

A solemn moment occured as the Pontiff of Yorkville blessed the west river westies "Grotto of the Gnomes". A sacred shrine going back many centuries. The GateKeeper of the shrine is our Wagonmaster and host of West River Westies.
Note: It was said by our host that his loss of the regatta was due to the lack of the blessing of the fleet by the pontiff of Yorkville. Look carefully at the photo below. You will see the Bateau Ponton right there.

I have obtained by extraordinary means the future plans of the Bateau Ponton for next years regatta. The wagonmaster is planning on attaching 2 Hamilton Sub-standard propellers.

Vanagon concerns / Where's the coolant leak?
« on: April 08, 2008, 12:34:12 PM »
I have a slow leak in my coolant system but I can't find where it is coming from.  This picture is taken near the driver's side rear wheel. The drain is for the water storage tank. If you look at the picture below you can see the cross memeber of the frame is wet with coolant. Somewhere, somehow coolant is leaking into the frame of the van, running down the crossmember and dripping on to the ground.

This picture is the other side (passenger side). You can see it is damp with antifreeze too. Where the devil is it leaking? Has anyone seen this before??  Phil

Vanagon concerns / Oh No... What now - UPDATED !!!!!
« on: March 16, 2008, 04:12:24 PM »
Winter has been tough on my van.  Look what has happened. Now what do I do?

It looks like I am going to have to do some body work and painting.  The paint people around here are not to good with VW colors.  Does anyone know of  a good "online' paint supplier?

Vanagon concerns / 84 Westy Starting Problems
« on: September 21, 2007, 04:50:08 PM »
So, Here's an interesting tidbit. I been having problems starting my Westy. I got gas but no spark. I know from experience the first thing you do is check the grounds, especially on the starter. I did. I polished them to a nice gleam.  It seemed a little better, but I was wrong. It didn't start today.

Hmm, I pulled the wire from the dynamo (ignition coil) off the distributor cap. Part of the wire was left inside. It was burnt. I clipped the end off, attached the metal clip, cleaned out the hole the wire goes into and viola! The westy is back to starting on the first crank.

How about that!  :D

Bus Blog / Cruise-in at Daves Diner
« on: August 02, 2007, 12:27:16 AM »
In my area we have a cruise-in night at a place called Dave's Diner. Sometimes a lot of people show up with all sorts of vehicles. I bring my Westy there which often draws a lot of interest.

BTW- Dave serves ice cream. Vanilla is the most popular. Two scoops anyone?
