hmm, do you know how to adjust the AFM?
look in the type2 archives to find some info on leaning out the mixture. I would put new injector 0-rings in there also if they are the original ones.

from the type2 archive
"And last but not least, the air flow meter provides the provision for idle mixture adjustment. There is a screw in the housing of the air flow meter that is used as a valve for an air bypass channel. The air flowing through this channel is not measured by the air flow meter and so affects the fuel/air mixture. Turning the screw clockwise blocks off the channel and so richens the mixture. Turning the screw counterclockwise opens the passage and so leans the mixture, as the extra air is not measured by the air flow meter and so the computer does not compensate for it. "

I put a hightop on my 78, my advice is do not use a sawzall to cut the hole, buy the expensive Bosch jigsaw blades for metal,I used at least 8 blades on mine, ( they snap easy) the roof metal is soft and thin, and the jigsaw will cut nicely and very easy thru it.

Robert and I have already talked about his bus and he is on my waiting list. There are a couple other cars on the list before him, but hopefully we'll get his bus in soon.

looking for an estimate on what it would cost to replace my engine with another VW engine...is this something that could be accomplished at home by someone used to swapping air cooled engines?

to clarify...I'm talking about installation labor, not engine cost

thanks

I think most mechanics get anywhere from $60 to $85 an hour..$65 seems to be the norm..and they will prolly charge a flat rate, this is where they say "ok this job is 10 hrs labor", and you pay that , regardless if it takes 15 or 6...kinda keeps you from getting hosed.
Stan Wohlfarth of Boston Engine..call him ..he will tell you . 508-333-7813 ....Joe

im pretty sure that the way a 74 bolts in is exactly like the later models, since i went from a full width westy seat ( blue plaid) to a 3/4 seat and there was not any problems with the attachment.
but i am also remembering from 3-4 years ago as well..JOE

« on: December 13, 2009, 04:36:45 PM »
well, got another lil munchkin on the way, she will be here in May!
so im thinking i would like to get rid of the hightop and get a pop top
now im talking just the top. westy would be best since the canvas is still made. this way I can have an up and down sleeping arrangement, where as the high top only offers one level, gonna need the extra room!! Rich still got a top lying around?
Thanks Joe

remove and inspect the lil elbow that is attached to the aux air regulator, its worth a shot.
I replaced the elbow with another piece of tubing all together, when there is a crack in that the bus will idle fine, but give it gas and it dies, I think you have a major vac leak on a hose that when shifted opens a crack in it. if you get it to idle, go do the wiggle test while its running, careful though, you dont want to create any new leaks or cracks, ...................Joe

I've said this before and I'll say it again.  The fuel injection on those older buses are easy to diagnose and repair.  All you'll need is a test light, multi-meter and the Bentley repair book.

you forgot vacuum gauge! hehe, F.I. is all about the vacuum man..
