Joan and I will likely go here as copied from the Red Baron's posing below. Hope other campers will be there too.

:(  I guess the question is where to go now the campsite appears to be full. Any ideas? I think there are going to be enough people needing a place, an alternate plan could evolve. Or, am I the only one that did not make reservations? What do you think?

Technical Concerns /

Unless your van has been rewired, the plug in at the dash is most likely connected to your main battery. You need to have a plug for the deep cycle battery added. I do not see any reason to disconnect the battery while charging. This is probably a means of making sure the charger system has no interaction with any electronics sharing the battery. If you had a charger short out or something like that, it could do damage to any sensitive electronics plugged into it.

What a huge bummer. Any chance there will be a spill over site where a group will form?

We are going and after that, hitting Acadia, then Cobscook. Or something along those lines. Cobscook is supposed to have nice camping right on the water with clamming on the beach.  Anyone is welcomed to join us.

Vanagon concerns / Octane requirements for my 2.1 liter waterboxer

When running the 87 octane, does it ever knock pulling hills? Knocking sounds like dry beans being shook in a tin can.

Bay window concerns / Electrical power for a roadtrip

I would go for a second battery wired with a relay to isolate it from the main battery while the engine is off. A deep cycle battery will be the most forgiving if you discharge it greatly. You could also add a 110v powered charger so you can replenish it while hooked in at camping sites. Someone on Ebay usually has a second battery relay kit listed in a "westfalia" search.  Then you can run your inverter with no worries. I would size the inverter to exceed the max demand, but not by a huge amount. For example, do not buy an inverter rated for 1500 watts if you only need 250 watts. It  would be inefficient, and cause your battery to wear down sooner.  What ever you do put a safety fuse rated for the gauge wire you need. If you plan multiple circuits, a nice 12 volt fuse box is available from West Marine. It is much nicer that the ones sold in automotive supply stores. I went with a marine diode type battery isolator. It is has advantages, but the cost, and complications to do it correctly are generally considered to much work for most people.
Best of luck,
Guy Kennedy

I was just recommended to go to Cobscook Bay State Park in Maine. It sounded very nice with waterside camping, and it is not far from Acadia National Park. Has anyone been there? I would love to hear more first hand input.
Thanks,
Guy

Bus Blog / Keep it coming

Where is my check already? Oh well, it should be soon. I think saving it for gas to West River Westies is a splendid idea! It should be enough for gas and fire water if the prices do not keep going up. I am about ready to mount a VW insignia on my prius!

I like the idea of a knock sensor. My understanding is when incorporated in a vehicle, they are configured to have the distributor automatically retard the spark. That would be cool. I looked for after market conversions, but found nothing.  Meanwhile the octane questions still looms!

I know VW asks for 91 octane gas for my 88. With fuel prices rising, and high octane gas being a premium, I feel the a temptation to try 89 octane fuel. I am aware if the octane is too low, pre-ignition can do harm. My question is how close are the theory and practice of this octane requirement? Are there folks out there doing this without issues? If so, did they retard the spark or take other measures to make things happy? My gut says be careful, my wallet says this gas is too expensive! Thanks for any feedback. It is always fun hearing other peoples views. Looking forward to some LIMBO events this summer.

Yes, you had it correctly. I typed Limbobus.com. At least it related to VW's, and was not porn. I wonder if a link on that site to ours would be a good idea? I must not be the only person making the same mistake. Just a thought.

Hi Folks,
I was just checking Limbo, and accidentally typed the Web address in as limbo.com. This brought me to a different web site that was essentially links to VW bus related sites. What is the history of this site? Just curious.
