The led light strip is great, but the one I posted is 3 feet long and better suited to be used by it's self. The festoon lights link is for bulbs that fit the incandescent type for interior lamp housing that have 3 torpedo shaped bulbs. I do not know of any drop in bulbs for your unit without adapting a bulb holder. A creative look at you housing should allow an adaptation. I would make sure the choice is for several high power Leds on the order of 1/2 watt or so. Look for LED's that already have internal resistors, and are made for 12 volts. Good luck!

I made one a few years back to handle the extra weight from a Fiama bike rack. Mounted on the left side for easy release while lifting the gate. It is made from 3/4" PVC conduit at 8-5/16"length. Plastic is nice, as it doesn't damage the paint, or rattle. :-) Guy

I can't wait until West River Westies. But something seems strange. I think the anti-mater Nevin from an alternate universe has planned it. As we all know the real Nevin likes Red. Everything he owns is red, or will be as soon be painted red. This "Green Theme" is an indication the Red Baron may have been abducted by aliens and altered in some inverse fashion. The Green Baron should be watched very carefully!

I have tried this multiple times. Using high temp aerosol paints. In my opinion it makes you feel good for about 6 months until it begins to rust. I have done it with brand new exhaust, sandblasted exhausts, and chemical rust removers on old exhausts. I will never waste my time doing it again. The solution is better metal such as a stainless alloy like the Japanese manufactures use, or like Frank Condelli's replacement exhausts. Or just replace them when they rot out!

Modifications and Alterations / Festoon lights

I recently had my drivers overhead cabin light strip my battery in my 88 Westy, and slightly melt the plastic lens. For some time, I have been wanting more efficient lighting to replace the stock interior lights. I have added two LED bar- strip lights on either side of the cabin lamp over the stove. They work well. but, it still left a lamp over the stove that can serve as an electric heater, as it pulls so much current. This week I replaced the three Festoon bulbs in the cabin lamp over the stove with high output LED substitutes. Wow, they are great! At one watt each, they draw only a fraction of the originals, and give no heat. The light is typical LED cool white, and very bright. I got them at LEDLight.com
Part number 38435 Try them, you will not be disappointed.
Next, I am picking out a smaller unit for the drivers lamp.

Best,
Guy

I have not mounted the awning brackets yet either. The angle looks pretty extreme.  But, I agree, without them you are vulnerable to wind. I am thinking of mounting them to plywood 1' x 2' pieces and driving the two RH wheels on them to hold them down. Then they would be secure to the ground.

Bay window concerns / electrical power for roadtrip

Although my second battery works well, it does not have the capacity I need for my 12V fridge during several night stays. Thus,I am adding a solar panel with the install nearly identical to Frank Condelli's. http://www.frankcondelli.com/solar.htm  The project is mid stream right now. I bought my used panel on Ebay to save some money. I also found 6 AWG marine cable for the install much cheaper on Ebay.  My battery is a yellow top deep cycle Optima, which I am not impresses with. The batter will charge from the alternator when driving, same as before. I would like to hear other peoples experience with different batterys.

Vanagon concerns / vanagon 2.1 coolant help
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:52:11 PM »
If memory serves me correctly that should do it except for elevating the front end around 1.5 feet. I think the head drains are the lowest point. The hoses can be left on, as they should all drain back with the front end up. It is also necessary to elevate the front to re-fill it. This part is a pain, as you need to run the motor higher than idle speed while filling it. This continues until the engine is hot enough for the thermostat to open so all the air is purged. This is done with the radiator vent open until fluid comes out. It really takes two people not to make a mess. At least that is how I remember it. Also use proper fluid made for VW's. The head corrosion problem is supposedly worse with regular fluid. I don't know, but I would not take a chance. Hope this helps.

Where do you like to go Camping? /

We made it to Cobscook as a substitute for the Buoy which was full. Cobcook was the cat's meow if you want to get away from it all.  Arriving after labor day allowed us freedom to show with no reservations and still get a spot on the water.  :P The camp sites are very private and there is clamming at low tide. Be prepaired, as the resources in town are limited.

I think Chris is on the money. Preventing over charging is important for long battery life. Also, for the trickle charger part, I would get one that will automatically float the battery. There allot of smart chargers out there that can be left on continuously.
