I remember my grandma's sister as I read the title of your topic. It is because "Sunflower" is the theme of her house. From the living room area up to the dining area, plates in the kitchen has also an attached drawing of sunflower in it. The accessories in the bathroom also has sunflowers and the bedroom got sunflower pillows. I miss that house and I look forward to see it once again. :)

« on: April 30, 2010, 05:46:48 AM »
In a month or two I'm going to put a 85 westy pop-top onto an 89 vanagon. Anyone out there attempted such a thing? I'm looking for any advice I can get along the way.
Thanks ahead for your input.

Bus Blog / VW has the Pope's stamp of aproval
« on: April 30, 2010, 05:40:05 AM »
Another news story I found on the LiMBO news feeds. Some of them are older but still cool.

The Pope's Volkswagen

Pope Benedict XVI has been presented with a special version of the Volkswagen Phaeton by Bernd Pischetsrieder, Chairman of VW's Board of Management.

The 450bhp six-litre W12 Phaeton is one of the long-wheelbase models, and according to Volkswagen it has been "specially equipped to meet the comfort, privacy and security requirements of the Holy Father".

The Pope is no stranger to Volkswagen products. In the days when he was known as Cardinal Josef Ratzinger he owned a Golf which was subsequently sold on eBay for just under €190,000.

I found this while reading some VW news from the LiMBO news feeds.
"Volkswagen tows a Boeing"

"Yes, you read that right - a Volkswagen Touareg V10 TDI has successfully towed a Boeing 747 along the runway at Dunsfold Aerodrome. Neither of the vehicles was exactly standard; the Boeing's engines had previously been replaced by dummy ones for the making of a movie, but its standard weight of 155 tonnes was restored through the use of water ballast
.

What do you have to do to a Touareg to make it pull that lot? Not all that much, as it turns out. The engine, suspension, wheels, tyres and basic body structure were all standard, though Volkswagen fitted the 4.56:1 final drive ratio from the V8 to replace the higher 3.27 gearing of the V10. Metal ballast brought the weight of the vehicle up to 7030kg, and Volkswagen also fitted new panels to make the car look like the facelifted Touareg which will go on sale next year.

Despite terrible weather conditions, test driver Uwe Krieghoff successfully towed the Boeing for around 150 metres at around 5mph before braking gently to a halt. He reported no problems, and in fact later admitted that "I was a bit disappointed we couldn't find something heavier to tow as it was a bit too easy! If anyone could lend us a heavier aircraft then please let us know."

Vanagon concerns / Vanagon 2.1 Coolant Change Help!
« on: April 06, 2009, 06:55:24 AM »
Hi
My 1990 2.1 vanagons coolant requires replacement.
My workshop manuel has left me a little confused with regards draining of old coolant. (cold)
As I intend to DIY my understanding is as follows:
-open coolant expansion tank cap
-drain coolant at drain plug on each cylinder head
Q . Is this all I need to do here ?

I thought I may have to disconnect hose at bottom of radiator(vehicle front) ! yes/no....not sure.
I also intend to drain old coolant while the vehicle is level.....is this ok?
I think I will be ok with refilling as the workshop manuel is straight forward here.
Any help appreciated

Vanagon concerns / Any updates on air cooled or other AVP rebuilt motors
« on: January 21, 2009, 10:06:29 AM »
I have a 1980 air cooled Westfalia and I need the motor rebuilt. I am in Boston and since Bob from Boston Engine passed away Stan and Glen are not currently rebuilding air cooled motors. They are only rebuilding water boxers. I looked at Jake Raby's web site which was referred to me by the Bus Boys and I do not want to wait or spend 7000.00 on a motor. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Technical Concerns / Re: 15" steel wheels
« on: January 16, 2007, 03:10:40 PM »
Mine has 14" wheels, as all 2WD (to the best of my knowledge) had. I'm planning to go to 15" x 6" with the next set of tires - which isn't for a while.

Also kicking around the idea of an extra set of wider rear rims for bigger tires, now that I have my locking diff low range transaxle (yet to be installed).

Thanks for the pic and diagram, I appreciate it.

John

When I acquired my '87 Vanagon Westfalia in 1991 it came equipped with two mounted snow tires. These snows were mounted on 14" Mercedes Rims that had been modified by the original owner to fit the rear Vanagon hub by drilling two .5625" holes in the locations shown in the photo below. These holes allow clearance for bolthead projections on the Vanagon rear hubs so the rim mounts flush to the hub. I only used them a couple of seasons in the early '90s with no trouble mounting or on the road. I have no idea from what model Mercedes the rims came from but there is a definite difference in design.
BTW: Is your '86 Vanagon equipped with 15" rims? I thought they were all 14".

Technical Concerns / 15" steel wheels
« on: January 15, 2007, 10:01:23 PM »
I've been researching this in regards to a 2wd Vanagon, and it appears there is no bolt-on wheel with the right ET, or center hub dia, except So. African wheels, which are almost as expensive as alloys.

It seems like some M-benz wheels might be correct, but most use a 12mm bolt (as opposed to 14mm) and don't have the right conical seat configuration for the VW lug nuts/lug bolts.

Anybody have experience with these - suggestions?
John

Technical Concerns / Re: HELP - 1971 Camper

ok ,here we go- there are 3 things for a engine to run air ,fuel , spark- with that in mind you can always solve any no running engine problem

you said that it will run on ether-that will tell us that is not a spark issue, also that it runs tells us that it is not a air problem
know that rules out 2 of the three so it has to be fuel related

1-do you see gas in the fuel filter? (only if you have the stock style filter that goes between the pump and carb)

2 if you look in the the carb and play with the throtle do you see any gas squrting out of the acclerator pump( side tube )

3 if you have no gas at any of these areas it most likly be the fuel pump

4 for the fuel pump check there is a ez way to check ,most of the time the diaphram in the pump rips and pumps gas ion the engine case.now check the oil level -a bit high - also smell the oil smells like gas- strong

if there is no high level or strong oder than we need to check the output of the pump

5 remove the fuel line going up to the carb and run a line from the pump to a can or metal container that you can see.have someone turnover the engine see how much gas comes out if any

just noticed that you installed a new pump did you recheck the hose connection to see if if the lines are on the correct possition?
Are you useing an aftermarket distributor cap? Go OEM if so. I know it's stupid but I had a cheeply made aftermarket cap, I tore the engine apart before finding out it was cracking apart and missing fires.
