Vanagon concerns / Is it needed to run?
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:22:54 AM »
With any of our beloved old "ass's that bear us" ~John Muir~, be they a bus from the 1950's to Early 90's something will eventually wear out.
I hear you ... "Tell me something I don't know".
My latest particular head scratching questions is concerning the real need for the :
Throttle Switch
Idle Stabilizer Control Valve and the
Idle Stabilizer Control Unit.

If you know what I'm talking about .... you know what I'm talking about and can skip to the bottom of the post.
If not here's a quick run down for the casual reader.

The throttle switch is under the throttle body and opens up when the gas pedal is fully depressed (cheer up little switch).  When it switches on it is supposed to tell the 'computer' to open the fuel injectors to full capacity (among other things) so you can get the most HP from your engine.  The thinking is you are trying to go up a hill or evade the Po-Po (Ha- Ha).

Both the Idle Stabilizer Valve (that rounded spark plug looking thing on the top of your 2.1 housed in a rubber mount) and the "Unit", located behind your passenger side tail light that looks like a large black plastic relay switch/box do just what they are named for.  Stabilize the idle.

Both my switch and valve are fried.  I think the "Unit" is ok.  I unplugged, timed and adjusted the idle last spring, and I don't seem to have a problem.
My '86 Weekender is my daily driver and get's way too much of my attention in her upkeep so she is driving well and strong.  (There are little intermittent hesitations at the top of second, but that's another post)
My question is how much better the bus and I will be doing if I replace the throttle switch (nearly impossible to find) and the Idle Stabilizer Valve (a $250 value).  FYI- the "Unit" runs about $400 new from BusDepot.

Right now I'm just in the thoughtful head scratching mode of what do I spend my next "change jar" purchase on?

Anyone ever do a replacement and lived to tell the tale?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Event/Show/Campout news and reviews / Meteor Showers
« on: December 13, 2010, 12:56:12 PM »
From NASA:
Baby, it's cold outside -- but you can still enjoy the best meteor shower of the year. The 2010 Geminid meteor shower promises to be lively, with realistic viewing rates of 50-80 meteors per hour and potential peaks reaching 120 meteors per hour. Anytime between Dec. 12-16 is a valid window for Geminid-watching, but the night of Dec. 13-14 is the anticipated peak.

From KingBee:
The later you stay up, or the earlier you get up, the better.  I heard the best time is arounf 3a.m..
So if you are a brave, hearty, imsomniac camper with a good coat, this is the night for you!

VW stuff Wanted / Bus needed for a movie shoot 8-10 thru 8-12
« on: August 04, 2010, 09:56:45 AM »
I have a buddy who is looking for a bus to use in a movie shoot.  I would let him use mine but I''ve got a shifting issue w/ 1st gear and I'd hate for them to get set up ... lights camera action ...  and the actor can't get her into first.
The bus would be needed for Tuesday (8/10) through Thursday (8/12) finished shooting around Noon.
The bus does not need to be in great shape, 'charater' of the bus is ok (beat up is ok, but not nessasary!).
Please feel free to contact the set coordinator directly at marc.damato@gmail.com or feel free to ask me via limbo email or this posting.

The Perseidies Meteor Shower Peaks the night of August 12 (a Thursday) to the 13th (as in Friday the 13th), usually a very lucky day for me!  Named after the Greek Hero Perseus, where the meteors seem to eminate from his constellation.

I'm looking for a campground in the middle of a rural area.  I thought the Bald Mtn CG where West River Westies takes place might be a good candidate.

A clear night and dark skies is needed to really appreciate this cosmic event.
The moon will be waxing and be at about 1/4 (like the cheshire cat's smile!) and should be a relativlel dark night.

Any suggestions on another CG?  Anyone want to join us?

Vanagon concerns / Throttle Switch Needed
« on: April 26, 2010, 01:15:06 PM »
What is a throttle switch?  It's located under the throttle body, that's the thing that the gas pedal wire attaches to (used to be a carburetor).  You can see the 2 Allen wrench screw tops if you lean over your engine and look down over the throttle body, you will see the 2 screw tops on a horizontal platform on the 'rear side' orientation.  Without taking out the throttle body this is all you can see of the throttle switch.

Mine is basically fried.  she gives jumping readings when she shouldn't and is causing havoc with my drivability, Decelerations etc.

I know I can open the VERY delicate switch and replace the wires and re-solder the whole thing ... but I'd rather not rely on my ability to open and rebuild a switch no bigger than a quarter.  Something that a watch smith should work on.

Anyone have one or even a throttle body I can buy from you?
Know of a parts van? 86-91 has the same part.
