Vanagon concerns /
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:02:30 PM »
If its not too late to ask...

I have an '84 and an '85 both vanagons.  One is a 4spd manual with the 2.1L and the other is a 3spd Auto with the 1.9L.

I will eventually put a TDI in one or the other.  I was wondering how to find out what the gear ratios are for the 4 and 5 spd manuals and the automatic.

Judging by the cruising speed RPMs for both vehicles, it wouldn't be worth swapping in the diesel...

Any thoughts?

Thanks guys - it was a vacuum leak that you could hear a mile away.  Once I taped it shut - no more idle problems.

Vanagon concerns / Racing Stripe!
« on: March 16, 2010, 09:39:47 PM »
I'm pretty sure that's a racing stripe there on the side -  ha ha!  Not sure how much over 55mph she will go.

Wondering if the  brakes are supposed to be that soft and if the idle is always hunting - not steady RPM???!!!!???

Does anyone know?

Vanagon concerns / We bought it!

We went ahead and bought it.  The exhaust is in good condition and the hangers are rusty but in solid condition.  The spedometer shows 65 when you're going 35 though!

Yes it is a hard top.  Eyore - ha ha!  Certainly has potential!

Thanks for the info.  Yes the PO swapped the 1.9 with the 2.1.  We went ahead and bought it!  We're gonna call it Eyore.

Vanagon concerns / Help buying a Vanagon 1985
« on: March 14, 2010, 10:11:33 PM »
Hi -  new to the site!

I have the chance opportunity to purchase a 1985 VW Vanagon (T3) 4 spd, 2.1L wasserbox, with 240K for around $2k.

The chassis and body appear to be in good condition with minor surface rust.  The paint job is in a pretty bad way so it may be a diamond in the rough... The interior is "well worn", but original and in decent condition - used by a youth soccer club!

Brakes are a little soft, but drivetrain seems good...

Does anyone have any info on the 1985?

Is this a good deal?

Any info would be really appreciated!

Thanks,
Josh P
