« on: October 07, 2019, 07:03:20 PM »
I don't have time to part out my old 87 Tin top Vanagon Its rusty and the front end needs a bunch of work. It doesn't have an engine or transmission- trans is available separately - It has some good parts left, fuel tank is only a few years old, power mirrors, good glass and headlights. If you're handy, you could fix it up. COME AND GET IT.. 800 OBO  LOCATION ADAMS, MASS

Vanagon concerns / bed liner as paint
« on: March 28, 2016, 08:02:00 PM »
Anyone ever put roll on bed liner on the body of their vehicle? Not just a van, any car.  I'm toying with the idea of painting my work vanagon with a roll on bed liner. I'm not too concerned about looks.

VW stuff Available / 97 Jetta 2.0L manual trans for parts.
« on: February 08, 2015, 05:36:12 PM »
Parting out a 97 Black Jetta GL. Hard t-bone/pole hit on right side. Runs and moves. Engine runs great. Manual transmission shift good and is quiet. Only issue it will pop out of reverse if not held in. I also have a spare trans if needed. Come hear it run and take what you need. If you want to the whole car, we can do that too. EVERYTHING IS CHEAP. MAKE OFFERS. I'd rather not send the car to the salvage yard if someone needs some parts. Cheaper from me than them. Some interior parts available. Pics available if needed.

I agree with Jon, the pertronix and the Fuel Injection are two different systems.  Now, the fuel injection does get a signal from the coil for RPM reference. Perhaps that might be a problem.  But I know a few people with fuel injected buses and Vanagons run Pertronix without issue.

Push rod tube seals are easier to replace on the pancake motor than a upright beetle engine, but it will take some time.

Basically, the valve train will have to come off and then you remove the spring that holds the push rod tubes in place.  Then you pull out the tubes replace the orings and then reinstall.

I like to pull the pushrods out and then stick them in a piece of cardboard to keep them in order so you can put them back in the same hole they came out of.  Reinstalling the hold down spring can be tricky too.

The axle shaft seals are part of the diff, which is separate from the automatic part of the trans.. It has 80-90W gear oil in it.  Where the Automatic takes Dextron/Mercon.

CV joints are pretty maintenance free. I'm not sure when  VW recommends they be repacked.  They mainly need to be repacked when the boot gets torn.  Prolly not a bad idea to repack them if your taking them out.  You can get away with adding some grease if the grease is smooth and creamy.  If the grease is thick and dry then you'll probably need to take them apart and clean them and then repack.

How wide are the rims..  My Eurovan had 15 inch rims on it and I think, it had a 195 70 15 loaded rated tire.  I forget the exact size. I have a set in the garage, I'll check it and get the exact specs. But I think the rims are like 5.5 inches wide.  Some of those EMPI rims are only 4 or 4.5 inches.  Might be too narrow.

Roxy, if it doesn't work out with Mikes bus, my 1967 bus is available. It has seating for 6 to 7 peeps.   The paint is getting a little worn, but she is still pretty photogenic..

On Long Island, New York, in Suffolk County. The prom is in June, we haven't been given the exact date/time yet, but I'm going to say it's probably from around 6pm-midnight. My best friend and I have wanted a VW Bus for 12th grade prom since 6th grade, it would be greatly appreciated!

obnoxiousblue, I think this one is for you.. Long Island is a little too far for me.. I don't like driving through the city.

Does the cooling fan run when the light comes on?  It should.  If not, double check the switch..

Usually after a couple of good runs, the air bleeds itself out of the system.

I hate to be the barer of bad news, but...Those old 1.6L diesels were notorious for popping head gaskets.  Overheating might be the begining... the T-stat could be sticking..
