Vanagon concerns / water boxer in mexico

does anyone know if the waterboxer engine is common and familiar for mechanics in mexico (and beyond in central america)? someone knows a good mechanic down there? how about parts availability?

can someone please tell me what an 'ecu' is?



i would also like to add that despite the trouble my milage is very good (21), probably because i avoid cities and drive pretty slow (50) to see the country rather than just the road.



the power loss is such that i have to shift down to third on the slightest of uphill stretches (i normally shift down when falling below 45).



i know how to check the wires, but how do i check if the plugs make a good connection?

after driving a 84 vanagon thru the US for 3 months, a spark plug cable failed and had to be replaced. since then (a month ago) the van has 30-40% less power and two mechanics have no idea what could be the cause. any ideas?

someone knows where to get an electronic copy (pdf or the like) of the repair manual (i have an 84 camper)? i'm traveling the country for only a few months and cannot get it any other way on the road.

Technical Concerns / ethanol working well?

searching google for just this question i found your posting and so i was wondering what's your experiences with ethanol in the gas as i have an 84westy as well and just started to get in trouble (sputtering, less power) when i got 10% ethanoled fuel.
