Vanagon concerns / Re: Westfalia Engine Replacement suggestions
« on: February 15, 2019, 05:03:09 PM »
You have many engine options, all depends on the $$$ you're willing to spend and how handy you are.  If you decide to go the least expensive path and rebuild your 1.9, you might want to upgrade to the 2.1 cooling system.  Other than that, GoWesty has a full line of rebuilt engines (pricey!).  Stay away from the infamous and well known  budget rebuilds (you get what you pay for).  As for shops, the only place I know and trust is on Long Island, NY, probably too far for you.  I'm sure there is someone in your area with the expertise and tools needed to fix Vanagons.  Stanagon here on the board might know someone up there... Good Luck!

Vanagon concerns / Pertronix Electronic Ignition
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:41:55 PM »
So... on my way back from W@W I got stuck on RT17, figured out pretty quickly that I had an issue with the breaker points.  Re-adjusted and drove home, she ran a little on the hot side but I made it.

At home I figured this is a good time for an upgrade and ordered the Pertronix Ignitor kit for my car. Installed it (and actually read and followed the instructions for a change...), and ... nothing.  Cranked, but no spark.  Checked everything, (yes, I paid attention to + and - and I have the blue Bosch coil...) tried again ... nothing.  Put the points back in, adjusted, fired right up.  WTF???  Put the Pertronix back in, ... nothing... back to points, runs fine.

Then I called Pertronix and they told me that their kit doesn't "work so well" with the electronic fuel injection and that I'd be better off with points.  At least they're honest, but does that make sense?  I know that quite a few people out there drive the Pertronix ignotion with no problem.  Any input?  Stick with points?  Did I get a faulty unit?
