I have been talking with some people on samba because I am having some of the same issues going on (85, 1.9).  I under the same understanding that the rad needs to be replaced.  I don't know when I'll come up with the extra cash to replace it...but look at the bright side it's getting cool outside and that is a little extra heat :D

Some people don't do this but I take just about everything with me in my van.  I keep everything under the back bench (I have the weekender so you know it's full sized) just in case you have to do some simple repair on the side of the road.  I keep stuff to do oil changes to replacing wires...and a AAA card in my pocket.  It's better to be safe then sorry

Peace

check your grounds!

I would say check your grounds on the left side of the engine (driver side).  I had a ton of bad grounds.  My big problem was the ground that comes from the harness that plugs into the distrubtor(sp?).  This ground was just worn out from 20 some years of driving.  But do the simple stuff first and maybe you will luck out

I have been away from the LiMBO for a little while but have not forgot about you all.  I went to Granny Grosses Bus 4 this last weekend and had a blast.  After 10 hour (562 miles) I arived in good ole Bevertown PA.  The first people I pulled up to was a crew out of New York.  They were a good bunch of poeple (most VW people are) who were more then happy to make me feel welcomed.  I did move the vanny because of bugs and a sun that would not quit.  After setting up and getting a bite to eat it was time to move onto the campfire.  A couple of monnies pulled out their insturments and were my Ipod of the night.  I joined a group that decided to play some midnight bocce ball(sp?).  Don't ask me how because it was something that you had to see.  Morning came and so did the breakfast .  I ate more then one man should ever consume...pancakes, eggs, pancakes,  eggs, the list goes on.  After taking in that much food I did what any grown man should do, sleep.  After getting up and finding some advil to take the pain that was in my head (had nothing to do with any of the beer...or did it).  Rain was falling but we all gathered under the shelter for door prizes and the 50/50.  I walked away with a cool vw shirt.  After a quick bite in the vanny it was back to the shelter for some music.  A moonie who goes by erock (did not get a chance to talk in person but Eric is his name) and his blue grass band picked us into the night.  As the band ended it's final set it was time to bring out the adult sparklers (you had to be there).  After more talking and hanging out it was time to get to sleep for that long drive back to cincy.  I did win the longest drive with the 562 and it was well worth the trip.  I wish I could share pictures and name of people I met but have forgot both of them...just kidding...I did however really forget the camera.  I hope to see you all soon

Peace-
John

If you talk with him please let me know.  His parents were really nice and they provide a nice place to camp, shower and swim.

So what's up with Dixie bus...It rocked.  I know I posted this like eight months ago but I just thought that I would let you all know.  I met some good people (come on, they 're bus people), got to go to a pretty good vw show, and camp at a cool place.  I was hoping that I would be seeing something popping up about it for this year so I could make sure I was off of work.  Anywhoo, I hope everyone is as excited for this years camping season as me.  Take care and be safe.

Do I feel like a dummy.

Well I typed in ecu when it turns out it is a ect.  I have been told that it is a engine control temp ( or something close to that).  The nuts and bolts of it is that it tell the computer the correct temp to run at and some other good stuff.  This is a little over my head but I think that it is a little sensor around the distributer???

Good luck man.

In no way am I any sort of van expert but I had the same sort of problem with my 85.  My van seemed to do tons better after putting on a new ecu.  I don't know what that really does but the guy that works on my van told me thats what he did and now it seems to run way better.

I'm really not that bad at working on these vans but with the 1.9 it's best to have others around to help out.

Good luck

I have been reading about this gathering and wanted to know if anyone has ever been and what to expect?

I live in Cincinnati so it would be silly for me not to go.  The way I look at it is any time in the vanagon is going to be a good time.

Hey everyone!  Well I'm going to be doing some traveling this summer.  I think my van is going to be fine but my dad thinks he will be getting a call to come pick me up.  In the past I would just take the things I needed for camping.  Since this winter I have started picking up some odds and ends.  I just wanted to see what you all bring.  Thanks

Just thought I would ask.  I plan on going rain or shine (it could take a little longer if it rains).

Well after sitting in the dark looking for sparks or any strange lights coming from my van I'm about ready to give up.  The one thing that I did see was an old green sticker on the coil.  I did some calling around.  Bus Depot had no idea what I was talking about and Gowesty never called back.  I am however ready to replace the coil, cap, wires, in hopes that one of thoes things or all of them together might fix my problems.  It looks like I'm not going to make it to EB but with any luck I'll be at Granny's.

Hey everyone.  I just wanted to get any input about would could be causing me problems with my van.  This post is taking off from what you might have seen in the mod's forum about making cover for my 02 and other wires.

Lets just act like I have all the money to do what I want to do to my vanagon.  This past winter I went through and fixed a ton of stuff and was hoping to get out and travel this summer.  Well it's early spring and when I thought I had everything fixed my 02 went bad.  I took the old one back and put in a new one and what do you know...problem solved.  Kind of.

I have put almost three thousand miles on my van with the working 02 and the other day it started to rain and what do you know it started with the stalling and missing.  One of the new problems I have noticed is that when I'm in third gear going between 35-40mph it's almost like a loss in power.  It does not die but just not the pick up that was there.  Are these problems connected?  I don't know.  If you can think of anything please help.

John
