: combi valve/air injection pump fault
: Gary Wright September 24, 2008, 12:08:40 PM
Just purchased '87 Eurovan. Engine trouble light indicates combi valve and air injection pump are faulty. Is this a common problem? Would it be wise to purchase used parts as new they are very expensive--$260 and $520. Any advice would be helpful . Thanks

Secondary air pump problems are common with the new VW's with that system.   The kombi valve sticks or fails and moister from the engine exhaust flows back into the air pump, filling it with water.  Which then fails.

Volvo's had the same problem.

Unfortunately a new valve and pump are needed to fix the problem.  If you can find good used part, you might be in the same predicament sooner than later.   OR at least get a new valve. You may be able to find a good pump.

Thanks for the info. Is there a Source of a well priced valve or does it have to be OEM ? Has vw fixed this problem so the new valve is less likely to fail? How can I tell that a used fan is working? Can it be wired to see if it runs?

Shameless plug:  I can probably get one through my store. Berkshire Foreign auto parts. 413-499-1130.  But it might be easier for you to get it from a local parts store.

The pump should run when the engine is cold. It might be a burned strip fuse.  I think its located near the left headlight on the radiator support.
