: Carat Conversion

Anyone know if converting a 1991 Carat to a poptop is possible? I know I should probably buy a Weekender to make things simple, but my Carat only has 61k miles on it, with new heads, and a bunch of other stuff. Plus I know what's wrong with it...nothing.

I've seen several ways to convert you van to a pop top. All of them require some degree of body work.

One guy I know cut the entire roof off a old camper at the pillers. Then cut and welded the top on to the bus. This makes the bus look original and you can sleep in it just like a regular camper.

Another guy I know just cut a hole in the roof and mounted the poptop on to the original van roof. It works, but the roof isn't smooth or completly flat and will be tuff for sleeping. Make good extra dry storage.

You could find a non westfalia top and mount it on top.

There was one fella in Canada (I think) that took apart the frame of the camper top and welded it to the roof of the bus. It is essentially the same that Westfalia did to the vanagons at the factory. Its probably about as much work as cutting the pillers.
