does anyone know if the waterboxer engine is common and familiar for mechanics in mexico (and beyond in central america)? someone knows a good mechanic down there? how about parts availability?
cheers, thilo

As far as I know, the waterboxer never made it to Mexico. VW used the Bay Window chassis until just a year or so ago and now they switched directly to the old 93 style Eurovan model. If you find a mechanic that is familiar with the waterboxer, my guess would be he has been to the states or had to fix one for a tourist. The engine is very close in design to a Type one (beetle) engine, just watercooled.
My advice would be to make sure the van is throughly checked out before heading to Mexico and carry spare parts. Perhaps set it up with someone back home to ship you spare parts if an emergency arises. Good luck.

Hey Jim, Did you take a smart pill? That's good advice and clear thinking. Where can I get one of those pills? I'm in desperate need!!!

Once in a while, I have a moment of clarity. Once in a while. I was diagnosed with A.D.D. when I was a kid, but now I think its early Alzheimer's. :?

I too was diagnosed with a disorder when I was young. They said it was D.U.M.B. and that I had it bad!
