: What do you all bring with you on a long trip?
: vanagonjohn April 25, 2007, 12:29:53 PM
Hey everyone!  Well I'm going to be doing some traveling this summer.  I think my van is going to be fine but my dad thinks he will be getting a call to come pick me up.  In the past I would just take the things I needed for camping.  Since this winter I have started picking up some odds and ends.  I just wanted to see what you all bring.  Thanks

John

A few years ago, Nevin and I did a series of articles in the newsletter covering what we pack in our vans.  Off the top of my head here is what I have packed in the van most of the time:

Sleeping bags

small throw pillow (kids use it all the time)

water hose

eletric cord

ceramic heater

1 lb propane tank

extra jacket

extra tee shirt

GoJo handsoap

flip flops

hat

first aid kit

two towels

two wash cloths

two slice toaster

small wash basin

dish soap

bar soap

Rain poncho

assorted flatware, including BBQ utensils

small fry pan (big enough to fry a hamburg and hot dog)

small pot (big enough to make Mac and cheese or boil hot dogs)

small mixing bowl (it was metal and could double as a large boiling pot)

paper plates

paper napikins

cups

bowls

handi-wipes (wet naps)

bug repellent

sunscreen

Thats all I can think of right now.

I used put a BBQ and maybe a cook stove on the rook rack when I travel but its not there all the time.

When I cleaned out my last Vanagon camper, I filled six, six gallon washer fluid boxes with stuff.   All essential camper equipment.

The EV has most of this stuff in it right now.  But the EV doesn't have all the cabinet space the Vanagon did.  It wasn't until I got the extra cabinets that I was able to pack the van with most everything I needed.  I used to have the left overs in plastic totes that I would have to put in the back taking up valuable space.  It was a PIA too.  Now I put in some food and personal items a away we go.

The one thing I miss about the vanagon over the EV is the roof rack.  The EV doesn't have one so I have to put the stove and/or BBQ in the back, taking up valuable space.

What I have to make up my mind about now, is if I'm going to use the 67 kombi for camping or not.  If so, then I need to put stuff in there too.  Oh woe is me... =)

I won't even talk about the motor home. It has enough stuff in there for a five people for a week.
