: Do you own a bay?
: Stanagon March 24, 2007, 01:21:20 AM
How many bay window owner's are amongst us?

I started with a '71 Westy that I "restored" and took to Nova Scotia. Also joined LiMBO in '89 when I had it at a show and met LiMBO's founding  father Zach Woods. It was a great bus and I even saw it years later. The nice Westy interior was all gone, even the front f'in seats. The rare EMPI wheel I sold it with was long gone:( And someone had painted the interior with black and neon splatter paint.

The Maaco paint job and hack body work I did were still holding up OK though. It was sad to see it so beat down. I haven't sold another bus since then.

First bus was  72 Westy that wasn't running, a lady down the road gave me in college.  I fiddled with it for a couple years, never got it going, I pulled the interior out and sent it packing to a junkyard after my folks requested it leave their yard!  So young and naive!  Looking back it wasnt' that bad, I just needed more info and knowledge and would love to have it back now!  Oh well.

Then after college I got a 76 Westy that was in fair shape.  Great price, running!  Took it out through the midwest, up to north north maine, Acadia, etc.... Was the daily driver for summers.

Moved out to Jackson Hole, WY for 6 years.  Saw an ad in the paper for a 78 bus for $500.  Had been sitting in a guys storage unit for 8 years.  The engine died on his way back from Utah and he had it towed back to the storage unit.  Someone had put a custom camper interior into the bus.  We bought it and had AVP send us a new motor, put it in and we put 58,000 miles on it in 6 years.  Drove it back and forth from CT to WY several times including 2 5000 mile trips around the country on our way back east.  Since moving back east it has been a little neglected since we purchased the.......

77 Westy that was on Ebay in CT, didnt' meet the sellers lofty goal, I made him an offer of $1000 and went and picked it up.

It wasn't running so we pulled the motor out of the 76 and put it in the 77.  We have cleaned the bus up and now just try to keep the rust at bay until we can spend the $$$ on some professional body work.

The goal this summer is to have both on the road, so we can go camping and have friends drive the other bus, so neither bus has to sit home on a camping trip!  Maybe then we can get some more folks into the world of our beloved busses!

So, that's the long story of us and our busses!

We also have a 69 beetle that sits in the barn.  Jessica's uncle bought it brand new in Parsippiny (sp??)  NJ and gave it to her brother in 1990 when he bought his 2nd car!  So it's still in the family.  We rebuilt the motor in 2000 and drive it around the yard from time to time.   It need the brakes overhauled and some heater channel work.  But you didn't ask about bugs!  Sorry!

Have a '71 Bay that I am in the process of bringing back to live.  The engine was a 1500SP Type1 that had been align bored to 80k and was needless to say shot.  Haven't decided what size engine or type of engine to put in it.  I want to be able to travel long distances and be able to have reliabilty and be able to go 70mph. (Not asking for much am I?) Anybody got some good advice from experience???  Have a kick ass stereo to put in it.  The body is pretty straight but will have to redo wiring because it was fried.  Going to take out bench seats and customize interior.  Don't want to put Westy stuff in it.  Just want a bed to crash on.  Picking up a bed mechanism saturday from a club member is parting out a '78 Westy.  Hope to have running by spring 2008.

Hi,
I am from Western Australia and have been involved with VWs and Kombis for many years.
First VW Bus or Kombi drive as we call them was when my sponsor loaned me one to move house back in 1964.
We started back into them properly about 2000 and have restored a couple for ourselves and quite a few for others.
At the moment organising resto on 1970 Poptop camper for our grandson and trying to find time to do our 73 Poptop camper.
Being retired helps but still have to fit in with other things :)

I will update my bay ownership...
I have only one bay now, a '73 that I traded a nasty old super beetle for. The bus may be a hull but it's still a better vehicle.

Hi all.  Janis (my '73 Riviera) and I are new here. I found her in the local paper 2 yrs ago and have been driving her everyday since.  The interior cabs. were rotted out and some were missing - so I am installing all new interior in a late 79-vanagon westy style, with upgrades.
I am happily married with 4 kids who can't wait to go camping in the bus.
(Hey beetlewarrior! How are you?)
: 79 Westy

I started my VW oddessy in '88 when I bought a '70 transporter when I lived in Baltimore. (My dad had a "74 when we were kids) It needed wheel cylinders, a battery and some love. I gave it all, but had to sell it before I got it registered. Wish I'd hung onto it. Then, still in Baltimore, I bought a 74 transporter with an automatic tranny, which I kept for a while and sold when I moved back to Jersey. Before I left Maryland I picked up a 75 Westy for $800, which was my pride and joy. But the shifter fork broke on it and I, for reasons of youth and ignorance took it to Aamco to have fixed. Well, they "fixed" it alright. I'm pretty sure they just welded it up, and they failed to reconnect my voltage regulator, to bolt up my driveshaft, connect my vacuum hoses; the list goes on. When I went back to them they just told me "it was like that when you brought it in". $1100 down the tubes because a few months later... you guessed it, the shifer fork broke again, so, being poor and broken hearted I sold it to a local VW guy for a few hundered bucks, swearing to never but another VW.
But then, maybe 10years later my wife spotted a tatttered 79 westy for sale in a neighboring town. I talked to the seller, (who turned out to be a good friend of some cousins of mine; good omen) and I paid him $1300 for it, and drove it home. It was at the point of deterioration where it would have to be saved or scrapped, so I pulled all the glass out (all rubber rotted) and had a friend of a friend do a boatload of body work for $550, and another f of an f paint it for three hundred. Put it together and have had, despite a few engine battles, the coolest daily driver I've ever had. Right now it's got a 74 1800 motor in it I got on eBay for $85 bucks.
My kids will never let me sell it; we camp as often as we can, which ain't nearly often enough.
