has anyone removed the a/c components from 87 westy?

Do you mean the roof A/C unit in the back cabinet? I haven't done one, Dale Ward had his 90 fixed buy a pro and it took them 8 hours to pull the unit, reconnect the water drain and put it back.

A few months ago, I removed mine from an '86 camper.; It's a big waist of space and not worth having, at least for me.

the a/c in the rear head space is what i want to remove...it seems that more than just the rear facing panel needs removal to get at the beast within that space...
i am looking for a step by step guide for removal of what is in there...i do not intend to salvage any of it....already sold the compressor...
it never worked well anyway...at least in the south it didnt...

It is most simple, take everything out and get rid of it.

From the other side of the fence, has anyone ever done a change from the old refrigerant to the new 134a refrigerant?
I have done much work to make my '86 nice and new and would love to use the A/C a couple of time during the summer (mainly due to my kids baking in the back seats).
It looks like the compressor works and the fan blows.
I've read thesamba articles, about evacuating the old gas and changing the compressor oil to mineral spirits.
Just wondering if anyone here has actually done it?
To comment on the original thread, be sure your old refrigerant is out before you begin removal otherwise you will release bad gas to the atmosphere. Good Luck, seems like a pretty straight forward job.
Hmmm .... Would you consider selling the pulled parts, just incase I need to replace anything?

I'm new to this list and a second time owner of a VW pop-top, it's been over 20 years since I sold mine, and time to hit the road again, so I'm purchasing an '86 Westy Wolfsberg Weekender. The A/C is shot. From what I'm reading here it sounds like there are some opinions that it's not worth fixing. I plan on spending part of the winter in the southwest and Austin. Would love to hear more on pros/cons of fixing vs. 86-ing. Thanks!!

Check with Jon and Mike at FAS in Harpswell Maine, if they can't fix it no one can. The shop # is 207 833 0009 tell them Rich sent you. Great guy's they did my Vanagon motor and trans for me. later Rich

thanks Rich! I have another friend who had them put a Jetta engine in his "85 and highly recommended them as well.
