: 84 Vanagon speedometer woes
: vwdreamin March 15, 2010, 02:18:15 PM
Maybe someone out in Limbo land can help. I just acquired a 84 Vanagon and I found while the speedometer seems to work, the odometer and mileage counter have crapped out. From what I've found on the web, this is a common occurance. What's may/the remedy----if any???? It's frustrating to keep guessing how far I've traveled.....Thanks, Greg

The odometer drive gear is probably cracked. Apparently I cannot post the link directly. Try odometergears dot com. He may have the one for your speedo.

Van-Cafe dot com does this repair for $40.00 with a 48 hour turn around. Check out their website. Send them your speedo and they will repair it and send it back. Doesn't get easier than that.

I've found that the pin that holds the odometer numbers in place slides out of place. The numbers move just enough so that the cog gear that drives them isn't making contact.  You can take apart the speedo and slide it back in place.  Then place a drop of glue on the end so it won't move again.

Sometimes the plastic that holds the pin breaks and then you'll have to replace the speedo.
